Details

This is the Raptor. It's a third of a meter wide, it's got a powerful brushless motor, and it's incredibly fast making it one of our most awesome radio controlled cars. Fitted with massive wheels, with high grip tyres, suitable for use either on or off road, this Raptor will go pretty much anywhere, and it doesn't hang about. To cushion the blows it is equipped all around with oil filled shock absorbers, and responsive and articulate wishbone suspension technology. Performance isn't all that this truggy offers though, it has a prepainted shell which is exclusive to Nitrotek, and is ready to run straight from the box - just take the Raptor brushless RC truggy out, charge its battery, place 8AA batteries in the handset and you're ready to go! With that big brushless motor and 11.1V Li-Polymer battery these models are ridiculously quick and at an amazing price!

The Raptor truggy is a high performance, high speed speed machine. With its unique truggy tyres and low centre of gravity design the models performs both on and off the tarmac. The 4WD system with front and rear differentials evenly distributes the massive power to the wheels making the Raptor a race winner.

The special motor in this model is much quicker than the motors found in other models. Because it is brushless it also means the motor needs no maintenance and can handle a lot more power being pumped into it. So to take full advantage of that the standard 7.2v Ni-Mh batteries that are found in most radio controlled cars kits has been replaced with a very powerful 11.1v lithium battery along with a balanced lithium battery charger which is needed for these special batteries. The brushless RC truggy comes fully built with everything you need to get racing apart from eight normal AA batteries for the radio handset. This is a high spec racing model that at full speed requires some real skill to control it. It is therefore recommended for ages 14+.

I was looking for my next upgrade from a 2WD WLToys L959 I purchased via a different retailer and decided after reviewing what was out there that this one seemed best value for money - I'm new to the whole R/C car thing but having experienced the L959 I craved more speed/accceletation and something with better tyre wear; the L959 used to destroy the edges of its tyres.
After reading the reviews and seeing a few youtube videos I opted for the pre-assembled version of the Raptor as coudln't see the value in buying one to assemble for same price.
Inside the box you get the car with battery inside, transmitter (a lot smaller than shown - they must have revised it) which now takes 4xAAA batteries, and a Lipo charger. Specs on the site are misleading and the brushless motor is not 2399kv, its 2082kv which i presume is less powerful but the official documents included confirms it should be the latter. The ESC is also a 35A not 60A as advertised again correct by the included documentation - not sure what difference it makes.. just pointing that out if there any sticklers for detail.
Build quality appears very good compared to what I had last and it really shifts which takes a bit of getting used to. I love the fact this one has oil filled adjustable shocks, makes such a difference across uneven surfaces. 4WD is awesome and I'm enjoying thrashing it around lots albeit learning the controlability still. Its quite cool the way you are able to change the settings of the ESC to control brake force and other behaviours which are not changeable on cheaper models - instructions a bit complicated though so I might tackle that in the future if i feel the challenge.
The battery lasts me at best 10-12mins on very short grass, I guess this may be improved if you stuck to a less friction surface. I've purchased two more batteries 2200mah 30C which will hopefully give me more drive time- standard one is 1800mah 25C. Its good that the battery compartment is adjustable to allow you to fit physcially larger units in there too.
I tried to measure top speed using an iphone strapped inside and it comes out at a modest 27mph; I could swear it seems faster than that (that's if my app is measuring it right). I was sure I read somewhere it could do 40mph+ but I guess getting closer to that may required more powerful batteries or a motor upgrade. That said its plenty fast for me.
Time will tell if this car is durable as I've only used it twice and hopefully I won't need to buy too many spare parts. The blue alloy undercarriage has some scuffs already but i guess thats what its there for :-). There are small foamy rings around linkage connection points which I presume are to protect from debris getting in, these don't seem robust and some have already come off. Tyres seems to be wearing ok; will be interesting to explore if I can get other makes and models that fit.
On the whole very pleased with my purchase and if you are looking for you first agressive 4WD RC truggy then this could be the one for you.

Nitrotek says: Thanks for the in depth review. Please note the foam rings are just for transport and are not meant to stay there so can be removed. (Posted on 25/08/2015)

Good first buy. Shame about my relatively bad driving meaning i broke the stearing servo part at the end of first full drive. Couldnt believe the speed of the thing it takes off so quick. Tearing up grass and flicking stones. Def needs a big open space and a bit of practice. Ordered a new part so once i get that i will be back out there. Genuinely cant really get over how q (Posted on 27/11/2013)

I own three Subaru Impreza cars that i built from Tamiya kits. I own two Super Clodbusters that again i hand built from Tamiya kits.Plus i have built one for some one else. You could say that i hold reasonable knowledge of Electric R/C cars. I have raced many cars and this brushless Truggy is something that i have used. I would recommend this Truggy to any one above the age of 16. Its ok for beginners as you do not have to use all the power available. When you gain your skill and experience then you can unleash the full power. Always fit a fail safe device. At this price its a good deal. Its always a good idea to get spares and upgrades if you can afford them as designs some times change and so may the spec. Go and buy one if you can. You wont regret it. Question:

Will the battery compartment take a larger battery, at say 155mm x 45mm x 25mm and is the connector i.e a Deans connector same as a JST-XH? Looking on Amazon at a 5500MAah battery and wondered if that would fit!?

Answers:

  • Posted by The Hobbyworx on Sunday, 17 January 2016

Hi, you can use a higher capacity battery but not a physically bigger one. Deans is not the same as JST. We have higher capacity batteries here with the correct connections: http://www.nitrotek.co.uk/rc-accessories/batteries/shopby/li_po/vant_power.html

Question:

I just bought the Marauder Brushed car for my son's birthday and after watching him play decided I need one for myself :) I'm new to the world of RC cars however and have read some things about LiPo batteries that scare me. So.... 1. Are they safe to charge - i.e not likely to blow up my house. 2. Does the car come with a cutoff? do I need one? if so are they hard to install?

Answers:

  • Posted by Sales 1 on Monday, 7 September 2015
Hi The batteries are safe if you look after them, i.e. not on constant charge, No they do not come with a cut off, you would have to buy one separately. Hope this helps!
